Application: Ballast Water Compliance Monitoring
In 2017 the Department of Land and Natural Resources (Division of Aquatic Resources), headed by Julie Kuo, finished testing a Ballast-Check 2 Handheld Fluorometer which is used for rapidly indicating if ballast water is within compliance levels set by D2 discharge standards. Results showed that the Ballast-Check 2, optimized for lower phytoplankton concentrations typically associated with ballast water, can rapidly and reliably measure 10-50 micron sized phytoplankton helping authorities quickly decide how to proceed with managing de-ballasting events for ships at port.
