New Cyanobacteria-sensitive Optics for Enviro-T2 In-Line Fluorometer
Enviro-T2 is ideal for drinking water or wastewater facilities that want to detect cyanobacteria and algae in their water flow. It is an accurate, single-channel fluorometer which easily integrates with data collection systems providing a 4 – 20 mA output proportional to the fluorescence from chlorophyll in water. The Enviro-T2 Red Excitation Fluorometer has maximum sensitivity for better detection of cyanobacteria; the Enviro-T2 Blue Excitation Fluorometer is configured with maximum sensitivity for all other algal groups. >>Read More

AlgaeWatch and CyanoWatch are obsolete; Enviro-T2 and Controller available as alternative
Key components of our AlgaeWatch & CyanoWatch Online Fluorometers recently became unavailable. We still have enough material to repair fielded units, but we are unable to build additional new units. This prompted us to introduce the simplified alternative, the Enviro-T2. We expect customers will find it to be an easy transition from AlgaeWatch & CyanoWatch. Our new solution for online monitoring of algae includes the Enviro-T2 configured with a controller.

Wide Trilogy Modules
Many of our Trilogy Laboratory Fluorometer applications require high sensitivity and repeatability. Glass cuvettes, P/N 7000-955, provide better results than plastic cuvettes in these cases. In support of this, we now offer wider modules which accept glass cuvettes as well as 10mm quartz cuvettes, P/N 7000-956, offering the best transmission available of any cuvette. We’ll suggest these new wider modules when appropriate, but please be sure to ask if this is of importance to you. >>See all available modules

Chlorophyll “Calibration” Solutions for Cyclops-7
We now sell a Chlorophyll Standard Solution (PN 2100-320) for direct concentration calibration of our Cyclops-7 Chlorophyll Fluorometers. This standard represents an equivalent chlorophyll concentration of 40µg/L which can be used to convert the sensor’s voltage response to concentration units enabling users to estimate chlorophyll as µg/L. It’s important to note that this calibration is an approximation. Actual µg/L estimates will vary depending on factors such as speciation, light history, algal stresses, pigment ratios, etc.

C6P Submersible Fluorometer deployed at Exploratorium

Last May, Turner Designs deployed a C6P Submersible Fluorometer at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. The Exploratorium is a public learning laboratory exploring the world through science, art, and human perception. Its mission is to create inquiry-based experiences that transform learning worldwide. As an educational facility, they make use of their new waterfront location with the installation of an environmental field station. This station is a collection of atmospheric and in-water instrumentation measuring weather, air and water quality. The C6P installed is a 6-channel fluorometer measuring the concentration of multiple water column constituents including turbidity, CDOM, chlorophyll, phycoerythrin, crude and refined fuels. Data from the in-water instrumentation are acquired by a Campbell Scientific data logger housed inside a waterproof box. The Turner Designs C6P provides critical insight into the biological response of physical forcing being measured by a CTD. In addition, the C6P provides insight into the response of the pCO2 mooring which can be affected by both physical and biological variability. >>Read More

Friends of Casco Bay is a marine stewardship organization founded in 1989 to improve and protect the environmental health of Casco Bay, Maine. Home to the Casco BAYKEEPER®, we are a founding member of WATERKEEPER® ALLIANCE, a network of more than 240 environmental groups working to protect waters around the globe. We are recognized for our “work-with” approach to seeking effective solutions to problems that threaten the health of our coastal waters by forging collaborations among diverse groups using an ethic that balances economic vitality with environmental health. 
One of the goals for Friends of Casco Bay is to develop a better understanding of the variability and drivers of carbonate chemistry in a coastal system. We are deploying the Turner Designs C-sense pCO2 sensor with a PME Submersible Logger alongside a multi-parameter data sonde providing temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, and pH data. Both instruments collect measurements hourly and are secured to a platform in about four meters of water at high tide. We estimated dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, and omega aragonite using the pH and pCO2 data. We deployed the station in July of this year and expect to leave the station in place year-round.

ICAM Data from Oceans MTS/IEEE in Monterey Bay, California

ICAM, an in situ Integrating Cavity Absorption Meter, factory configured with nine (9) wavelengths from UV (365nm) to Red (676nm) was at a dockside demo for the OCEANS MTS/IEEE conference in September 2016.
The ICAM was used to measure two algal cultures, Tetraselmis and Cyanothece, in an effort to show how it can resolve differences between algae that have characteristic pigment signatures. Figure 1 below shows very distinct spectra correlating to the specific pigments within each algal culture measured. The absorption in the near-red region of the spectrum indicates presence of phycobilins, typically found in cyanobacteria such as Cyanothece, versus weak absorption at those same wavelengths for Tetraselmis, which lacks phycobilins.

Trilogy Manual Revised

Turner Designs continuously updates our technical documentation with the most current information. We recently revamped the Trilogy manual to provide greater clarification on specific customer questions and comments. For those of you that have an older Trilogy you might find it helpful to download the latest version from our website. One important addition to the manual is a description of, and the benefits of, externally calibrating the Trilogy (See Appendix E). The example in the appendix uses chlorophyll standards, but this type of a calibration can be made using any standard that has a known concentration. Ballast-Check 2 Poster at Ocean Optics

Turner Designs presented a poster on the Ballast-Check 2 at Ocean Optics in Victoria, B.C. in October 2016. The goal of the poster was to show how in vivo fluorescence detection can be used to verify ballast water compliance. Its ease of use and low cost make the Ballast-Check 2 a desirable indicative measurement tool for ballast water compliance by ship owners, ship operators, port state or regulatory officials.

Ballast-Check 2 Technical Update with new partner, WSS

The IMO Ballast Water management convention was ratified 12 years after being proposed and will enter into force on September 8, 2017. Turner Designs is excited to partner with Wilhelmsen Ships Services for sales & service of all shipboard requirements for the Ballast-Check 2. Wilhelmsen and Turner Designs recently wrote this Technical Update providing an overview of the specification for allowable discharged ballast water and how to do an indicative analysis showing that ballast water is in compliance.

Repairing older Cyclops-7s & AquaFlours

Due to material obsolescence we are no longer able to repair Cyclops-7 with serial numbers prior to 2100455 and AquaFluors with serial numbers prior to 800430. We hope you had many years of good use from your instruments and will consider buying new ones if your old ones stop working. Our sincere apologies for not being able to repair the older units.
