Turner Designs hit the ground running in 2014 with several new product announcements at the top of our to-do list. We officially released ICAM, our Integrating Cavity Absorption Meter developed in conjunction with Texas A&M University. It’s been a long time coming and we appreciate all the interest expressed by customers over the years. We hope you will all agree it’s been worth the wait. In February we introduced C-sense, a small low-cost in situ pCO2 sensor, expanding the scope of products offered by Turner Designs for water quality monitoring. To help us continue our high level of product support, we recently added Luke Beatman as a Product Specialist to our marketing team.

ICAM, in situ Integrating Cavity Absorption Meter

We are very excited to introduce our newest major product, ICAM, an in situ Integrating Cavity Absorption Meter. Factory configured with nine (9) wavelengths from UV (365nm) to Red (676nm), ICAM enables discrete absorption measurements over a wide spectrum. The patented integrating cavity design means that little or no scatter correction is needed. C-sense, compact in situ pCO2 Sensor

We are also excited to offer C-sense, a compact, lightweight pCO2 sensor for measuring the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in liquids. Designed for applications involving immersion in water, oil, or water and oil mixtures, C-sense uses an oil-resistant membrane interface with a compact temperature-compensated non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) detector for measuring dissolved CO2 gas. >>Read More

Continuous Remote Water Quality Monitoring provided by the Wavelet and Cyclops-7

Ayyeka’s Wavelet is an all-in one remote monitoring kit that covers all aspects of a project from the sensor to data collection, transmission and analysis. It uses a cloud-based data center to view, analyze and plot sensor information. The Wavelet is an autonomous system, powering the sensor from its internal battery. The outputs from analog sensors, such as Turner Designs Cyclops-7s, are converted to digital signals through a high-end 16 bit analog-to-digital converter. Data are then transmitted, via a secure connection, to a cloud-based data center for collection and management.

The Suisun Bay Phenomenon

Photosynthetic yield is measured in an effort to estimate the photosynthetic efficiency of primary producers, more specifically the organism’s ability to use light for photosynthetic processes. When phytoplankton are nutrient or light limited, stressed or exposed to biotoxins, their photosynthetic yield decreases indicating a blocking or degradation of the photosynthetic pathway resulting in a diminished ability to produce sugars or compounds necessary for growth. Typical yield values, calculated as the ratio of variable fluorescence to maximum fluorescence, range from 0.00 to 0.65. Yields closer to 0.65 indicate healthy algal populations (i.e. not limited from growth; photosynthetic pathways open).

The Impact of the T Factor

The Turner Designs Technical Support Department strives to keep customers as informed as possible by constantly researching, updating, reviewing, and making resources available. A good understanding of how temperature affects fluorescence is required for fluorometric analyses and we have references in our FAQ’s and application notes stating details and formulas regarding temperature corrections. However, this is so critical to fluorescence measurements we thought we’d review it here. In general, as temperature increases fluorescence decreases.

For some of our environmental customers, the temperature variance and subsequent effect on fluorescence is seasonal.   For some of our industrial customers that are using our instruments in boilers and cooling towers, the temperature variance is much greater. In both cases, the difference between the temperature of the instrument during calibration and the temperature of the sample needs to be well-documented for correcting fluorescence data thereby maximizing accuracy of concentration estimates.  >>Read More

Interchangeable Cyclops-7 Submersible Logger now available

The Cyclops-7 Submersible Logger made by Precision Measurement Engineering, Inc. (PME) is now available with an underwater connector to enable easy swapping of Cyclops-7 sensors.   Users have the ability to quickly switch between Cyclops-7 sensors in the field for collecting data across multiple applications.

10AU Turbidity Optical Kit

Turner Designs’ 10AU is a versatile laboratory or field fluorometer that can be configured for numerous applications. Configuring the instrument for a study is relatively easy; you simply install a lamp and optical filters (excitation/emission) and adjust the instrument’s sensitivity. Examples of some standard applications include: extracted chlorophyll, rhodamine dye, dissolved organic materials, or oils. Of the many optical kits we carry, we haven't historically offered an optical kit for measuring turbidity. Prompted by customer requests, we recently defined and tested an optical kit for measuring turbidity with the 10AU (P/N: 10-307R). This optical kit consists of a lamp, two optical filters, one reference filter, and attenuator plate, when required. The wavelength used for this application is 550 nm. Using Amco Clear Turbidity Standards (3000 NTU, PN 8621), we tested instrument limits and determined a Minimum Detection Limit (MDL) of 0.3 NTU with maximum linear range of detection to 1000 NTU. The overall dynamic range of the instrument is 0-2000 NTU.  >>Request Pricing

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

New donation program

In the past, Turner Designs had a donation program where people submitted proposals for how they would use an AquaFluor or Trilogy and we would award one of the applicants with an instrument. We’re changing this program to allow more customers with budgetary constraints to use our instruments for their research. We will now issue requests for proposals based on specific instruments or applications. We still want to receive information after you complete your study – data, photos, conclusions, etc. We’ll select from the proposals and possibly award donations to several researchers, rather than just one as before. Here is our first request:

Tell us what you’d like to do and what information or data Turner Designs should expect from your research. Introducing Luke Beatman

We recently hired a new Product Specialist, Luke Beatman. Luke comes to us from Liquid Robotics where he was project manager for the PacX mission while working as an Oceanographic Data Analyst. Luke brings a broad range of experience with instrumentation having previously worked at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), Elkhorn Slough Foundation, and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML). Luke is an important addition to our marketing team adding to our abilities to define, test and introduce new products while working closely with customers. We are excited to have Luke on board!

No longer repairing TD-700 instruments

The TD-700 was obsoleted quite a few years ago and replaced with our Trilogy Laboratory Fluorometer. Effective January 1, 2013, we stopped repairing TD-700s. However, we offer a TD-700 trade-in discount for a new Trilogy. The Trilogy is a compact, multifunctional laboratory instrument that can be used for making fluorescence, absorbance, and turbidity measurements using the appropriate snap-in module. Some of the applications we've added beyond the TD-700's applications are Optical Brighteners, Phosphate, Nitrate and Silicate.

Worldwide Distributor meeting

Last October 20 distributors from 12 countries came to Turner Designs for training on new products & applications. It was a full three days and we ended with a wonderful afternoon at the San Francisco Exploratorium (of course stopping in to see our C3s deployed off their pier and collecting data).
